Great question! Every state in the US, except for Montana, is an At-Will State. So, you absolutely don’t have to go through progressive discipline, you can terminate an employee for any reason at any time. HOWEVER, always remember that your employee has the ability to hire an attorney (who will represent them for free) to sue you. And, jury’s are predisposed to side with the employee particularly if you don’t have the documentation to show that you had a legitimate reason for terminating your employee.
